About The Position

The Transportation Worker 2 Mechanic performs full-level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment. This includes minor overhauls of gasoline or diesel engines, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and replacement of various components such as motors, belts, seals, bearings, blades, and brakes. The role involves routine services in both field and garage settings, testing equipment after repairs, and inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists higher level mechanics in advanced equipment repairs.
  • Performs maintenance, minor repairs, and minor overhaul on gasoline powered equipment.
  • May work with components on diesel-powered equipment.
  • Changes and repairs tires on vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Installs windshields and door glass.
  • Services components of chassis assembly.
  • Repairs hydraulic brake systems.
  • Maintains routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
