About The Position

Under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of traffic control signs and supports. Installation and removal of signposts as well as erecting traffic control signs and barricades in construction and maintenance projects. Will be responsible for operating various equipment for sign installation such as a hydraulic post driver, chop saw, torch, and hand tools. Will help with the installation of new or repaired electronic traffic signal systems, setting up lane closures, road closures, and detours signage as well as flagging motorist through the work zones. May operate motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, end loader, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, man lifts, hydra platform, and tandem-axle truck. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment in the area of Traffic Control.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
