This is a Transportation Worker II position located in the Rowan County Maintenance Unit, responsible for the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Rowan County. The role involves a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State-maintained roads. This includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right-of-way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating various hand and power tools, as well as equipment such as asphalt maintainers, asphalt patch trucks, tandem dump trucks, crack sealing machines, rollers, sweepers, skid steers, and backhoes. The position also involves monitoring tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, responding to emergencies like snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work. Safety-toed shoes are required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail, which requires obtaining an inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety, involving a criminal history check, necessary training, and being at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant must legally operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement, or obtain it within 360 days of hire. Pre-employment drug testing and completion of specific release and background forms are required.
