The Transportation Worker 2 Mechanic will report to the District Equipment Shop. This position, under general supervision, performs full level repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation vehicles and all types of highway equipment in need of repair. Will perform minor overhaul of gasoline or diesel-powered equipment engines. Performs vehicle diagnostics and troubleshooting for repairs. This would include but not be limited to the replacement of motors, belts, seals, bearings, blades, brakes, tires, making minor mechanical repairs, and routine services in both the field and at the garage. With appropriate certifications and licenses, drives equipment after repairs to test operations. Responsible for inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations. Will assist higher level mechanics in advanced equipment repairs. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. Pay Grade 11H Tier 1 hourly rate: $17.5313
