About The Position

AECOM is seeking a Traffic & Intelligent Transportation System Manager to join its Transportation team in Indianapolis, Indiana. The role leads traffic engineering and intelligent transportation systems projects that improve roadway safety, mobility, operational efficiency, and the transportation experience. It combines technical expertise with project management and team leadership to deliver data-driven solutions for public-sector transportation agencies and other clients. The manager leads project development and delivery across traffic engineering, transportation planning, roadway design, and emerging technologies. Work may include traffic operations and simulation, safety assessments, traffic control and staging, ITS design, and technology integration for real-time traffic monitoring, incident management, and traveler information. The role also mentors early-career professionals, coordinates multidisciplinary teams, maintains client relationships, and supports business development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus six years of related experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Demonstrated experience managing traffic engineering or ITS projects, including technical delivery, staff coordination, client communication, and management of scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams, mentor technical staff, review engineering work, and communicate technical concepts clearly to clients and stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities independently or collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Twelve years or more of progressively responsible experience in traffic engineering, traffic control design, traffic studies, ITS, traffic operations, or transportation project delivery.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Indiana, or ability to obtain Indiana PE licensure within six months.
  • Experience delivering transportation projects for state departments of transportation, local public agencies, toll authorities, or other public-sector transportation clients; familiarity with INDOT standards, design requirements, and project development and submittal processes is strongly preferred.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing, and coordinating traffic control plans, maintenance-of-traffic plans, traffic signal and signing plans, ITS design plans, specifications, and engineer’s estimates.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and applicable transportation design platforms, and experience with traffic analysis and simulation software such as Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, or comparable tools.
  • Experience with ITS planning, design, or implementation involving traffic monitoring systems, communications networks, field devices, traffic management centers, incident management, or traveler information systems.
  • Familiarity with the ITS systems engineering process, including requirements development, concept of operations, system architecture, interface coordination, integration, and verification and validation.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state transportation requirements, AASHTO guidance, MUTCD provisions, and agency-specific traffic engineering and work zone traffic control standards.
  • Experience applying traffic data, operational analyses, and safety performance measures to evaluate alternatives and recommend transportation improvements.
  • Experience supporting proposal preparation, client presentations, business development, and identification of new transportation project opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage traffic engineering and ITS projects from planning and preliminary design through final design and delivery, within scope, schedule, budget, and AECOM quality standards.
  • Lead traffic engineering studies, including traffic operations analyses, traffic forecasting, intersection and corridor evaluations, capacity assessments, and traffic simulation.
  • Direct or support roadway safety studies and operational assessments, and develop recommendations to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance roadway safety.
  • Lead or support planning, design, and implementation of ITS improvements, including traffic monitoring and detection systems, communications infrastructure, dynamic message signs, closed-circuit television systems, and other traffic management technologies.
  • Oversee development of traffic control plans, maintenance-of-traffic strategies, construction staging plans, signal and signing plans, ITS layouts, specifications, engineer’s estimates, technical memoranda, and reports.
  • Apply the systems engineering process to ITS projects, including stakeholder needs, system requirements, alternatives, and coordination of system integration and implementation.
  • Coordinate project activities with transportation agencies, municipalities, metropolitan planning organizations, contractors, utility providers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet applicable agency requirements, design standards, technical specifications, and quality management procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance, review calculations and design documents, and oversee engineers, technicians, and early-career professionals.
  • Manage project resources and financial performance, identify project risks, and address scope, schedule, budget, and quality issues.
  • Collaborate with roadway, civil, electrical, structural, planning, and construction professionals to develop integrated transportation solutions.
  • Support client relationship management, proposal development, technical presentations, and business development initiatives.
  • Stay current with traffic engineering practices, ITS technologies, transportation safety initiatives, and emerging mobility solutions.
