Thermal Mechanical Engineer, Technical Solutions

Ecolab Inc.•San Jose, CA
•$150,000 - $200,000•Hybrid

About The Position

As a Thermal Mechanical Engineer on the Technical Solutions team at CoolIT, an Ecolab company, you will help advance direct liquid cooling technologies for high-performance electronics, including AI, high-performance computing, and data center applications. You will mature technologies from proof of concept through validation and readiness for product integration, applying thermal, fluid, and mechanical engineering principles to meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability objectives. The role involves assigned design activities, analysis, prototyping, testing, documentation, and collaboration with manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer-facing teams. It reports to the Technical Solutions Engineering Manager. You will work on passive cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds, and modular cooling system components and assemblies. The role advances technologies from approximately TRL 3 through TRL 5 and provides technical support for customer programs when solutions are not yet at the required readiness level. It includes frequent travel to customer sites within the Bay Area, occasional travel to headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, and international travel as business needs require. Candidates must reside in the Bay Area. The work location is hybrid, with full-time standard business hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience applying heat transfer and fluid mechanics principles to thermal design, including use of CFD models to evaluate fluid flow, pressure drop, and heat transfer.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up and statistical tolerance analysis, mechanism design and analysis, FEA, DFM, DFMEA, engineering testing and validation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Proficiency with CAD and simulation tools such as SolidWorks to create production-ready models and drawings, perform analyses, and optimize design performance.
  • Must reside in the Bay Area.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 7 years of experience in thermal-mechanical product development.
  • Proven experience designing mechanical components and assemblies for mass production using multiple manufacturing processes.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng./P.E.) designation or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Master's degree or other advanced training in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Mechanical Engineering specializing in Fluid Dynamics, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Design and mature thermal-mechanical products and concepts for passive cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds, and modular cooling system assemblies, advancing performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Advance liquid cooling technologies from approximately TRL 3 through TRL 5 to prepare them for adoption by product development teams.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and related documentation in accordance with company standards, GD&T practices, and DFM requirements.
  • Conduct thermal, fluid-flow, and structural analyses; perform laboratory testing, data analysis, DFMEA, and root-cause investigations to validate designs and optimize product performance.
  • Provide technical support for customer programs that require technology development for solutions that have not yet achieved the required readiness level.
  • Solve engineering problems involving heat transfer, fluid dynamics, mechanical design, simulation, and product validation within tight timelines.
  • Represent the technical team at customer sites, provide hands-on engineering support, gather customer and application requirements, identify product and technology trends, and help transition early-stage technologies into customer programs.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer-facing teams.
  • Travel frequently to customer sites in the Bay Area, occasionally to Calgary headquarters, and internationally as business needs require.
