About The Position

Raytheon is seeking an experienced Principal Thermal Engineer for its Mechanical Analysis and Test (MA&T) Department in Tucson, Arizona. The department ensures structural and thermal design robustness across Raytheon products, from preliminary concepts through fielded-system support, using classical and empirical methods, finite element analysis, and testing. The role conducts detailed thermal analyses throughout product lifecycles, from design trade studies and proposals through qualification testing and production support. Problems may range from classical hand calculations to detailed finite element analyses and require imaginative, thorough, practical solutions aligned with organizational objectives. The engineer is accountable for completing work within agreed cost and schedule, presenting work for peer review, reviewing other engineers’ work, planning and supporting tests, reducing test data, and correlating thermal models. The position is onsite in Tucson, Arizona. An active and transferable U.S. government security clearance is required before starting; the posting also states that the candidate must be able to obtain an interim clearance before the start date. U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), and at least 8 years of prior relevant experience. A related master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience; a related Ph.D. may substitute for 5 years.
  • Experience in thermal analysis using FloTHERM, PATRAN, Thermal Desktop/SINDA, ANSYS, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience applying mechanical principles to classical thermal analysis inside and outside finite element tools.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in thermal testing, including planning, organization, execution, data reduction, and correlation.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team of thermal analysts on major program efforts.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required, and the clearance must be active and transferable prior to the start date.
  • Must be able to obtain an interim U.S. government-issued security clearance prior to the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 10 or more years of professional experience in thermal analysis of complex systems involving collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Experience with a solid-modeling CAD tool such as CREO or equivalent.
  • Experience in electronics cooling and aerodynamic heating analyses.
  • Demonstrated experience leading thermal testing, including planning, organization, execution, data reduction, and correlation.
  • Earned Value Management System knowledge.
  • Experience supporting EACs, BOEs, and proposals.
  • Experience presenting to external customers.
  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or an aforementioned discipline.
  • ABET accreditation is preferred, but not required.
