About The Position

Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems designs, tests, and supports naval power conversion, distribution, motor control, and drive systems. The Mechanical Engineer role focuses on turning thermal requirements for electrical and electronic equipment into practical, testable designs and supporting those designs through production. The position is based at the Menomonee Falls site, where engineering, manufacturing, and testing capabilities are located together. The engineer develops thermal-management solutions from concept through detailed design, testing, and production support. Work includes estimating heat loads; evaluating conduction, convection, airflow, and liquid-cooling approaches; using analysis, simulation, and test data to assess design options; and designing mechanical features and assemblies that balance cooling performance with packaging, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability. The role also involves preparing and maintaining technical documentation, collaborating across functions, supporting prototype builds and qualification testing, and investigating discrepancies to improve designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Relevant experience applying heat-transfer and fluid-flow principles to mechanical or electromechanical products.
  • Experience with 3D CAD, engineering drawings, and sound mechanical-design practices.
  • Ability to plan an analysis, explain its assumptions, interpret results, and validate conclusions with test data.
  • Clear communication, curiosity, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • May require an active Department of Defense security clearance or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable time after employment begins.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with power electronics cooling.
  • Experience with forced-air or liquid-cooled systems.
  • Experience with thermal simulation.
  • Experience with environmental testing.
  • Experience with products designed for demanding operating conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop thermal-management solutions for electrical and electronic equipment from early concepts through detailed design, testing, and production support.
  • Estimate heat loads and evaluate conduction, convection, airflow, and liquid-cooling approaches to keep components within required operating limits.
  • Use analysis, simulation, and test data to compare design options, identify risks, and recommend improvements.
  • Design mechanical features and assemblies that support cooling performance while considering packaging, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability.
  • Create and maintain models, drawings, specifications, calculations, test plans, and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and test teams to resolve design and integration challenges.
  • Support prototype builds and qualification testing, investigate discrepancies, and apply findings to improve designs.
