Thermal Hardware Engineer

Intuitive Machines•Palo Alto, CA
•$82,000 - $136,000•Onsite

About The Position

Lanteris Space Systems is seeking a Thermal Hardware Engineer to join its Thermal Engineering team in Palo Alto, California. The role focuses on thermal control and thermal protection hardware for satellites and spacecraft components. The engineer interprets program requirements and directs the design, manufacture, and integration of spacecraft thermal hardware, including blankets, shields, and related hardware. The role involves close collaboration with thermal engineering, analysis and manufacturing, space environments, mechanical design, assembly integration and test (AIT), and other functions to ensure designs are complete. The engineer creates model-based designs for thermal insulation and shielding; creates or updates and releases dimensioned drawings for 3D-printed, fiberglass, or metal shielding; and creates installation drawings showing how blankets, shields, and bracketry are located and integrated onto spacecraft. The role also includes leading design reviews, inspecting thermal hardware, and supporting its integration through all phases.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline; four additional years of experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Two years of relevant experience; a master’s degree may account for two years of experience.
  • Understanding of and proficiency in computer-aided design software such as Creo Parametric and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to accommodate occasional non-standard shifts, including swing shifts and weekend or holiday shifts during peak milestone delivery periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of experience in space-industry thermal control and thermal protection.
  • College coursework or experience in heat transfer.
  • Understanding of mathematics, physics, and material properties as they relate to mechanical components and systems.
  • Experience with Teamcenter or PLM software.
  • Good spatial visualization ability.
  • Experience with hands-on production support.
  • Experience creating and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Ability to contribute to continuous improvement projects.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, project and time management, ability to meet deadlines, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Interest in thermal engineering and/or space systems.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and implement thermal hardware requirements received from thermal subsystem leads.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional personnel to develop thermal hardware designs that meet requirements.
  • Complete engineering design of thermal control and thermal protection hardware.
  • Use Creo Parametric to develop engineering models and drawings.
  • Initiate engineering change requests and notices.
  • Support prototyping, manufacturing, and fit checking of thermal hardware.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports on work performed.
  • Provide functional guidance to less experienced technical personnel.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Interpret program requirements to direct the mechanical design, manufacture, and integration of spacecraft thermal hardware.
  • Create or update and release dimensioned design drawings for 3D-printed, fiberglass, or metal shielding.
  • Create thermal installation drawings for spacecraft blankets, shields, and bracketry.
  • Lead design reviews, complete thermal hardware inspections, and support spacecraft thermal hardware integration through all phases.
