Thermal Fluids Mechanical Engineer - LiquidStack Cooling Solutions

Trane Technologies•Carrollton, TX

About The Position

Within Sustaining Engineering, the Thermal Fluids Mechanical Engineer supports the performance, reliability, and serviceability of LiquidStack liquid cooling products, including coolant distribution units (CDUs). The role applies heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics to support released products, validate engineering changes, investigate performance issues, and help transition new products into production and service. Assignments are performed within a defined scope under moderate supervision, with guidance from senior engineers and engineering leadership. The engineer performs thermal and fluid calculations and testing, supports laboratory setup and instrumentation, investigates issues arising from manufacturing, laboratory testing, or field operation, and evaluates alternate or replacement components. The role works across engineering, quality, manufacturing, and global services, and collaborates with electrical and controls engineers. It also prepares calculations, test reports, recommendations, and documentation, and contributes to product specifications, test procedures, troubleshooting guidance, and service documentation. The position is onsite Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, employees may choose their work location, balancing it with work requirements. This is a safety-sensitive role and may require additional drug screening.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of relevant engineering or laboratory experience, which may include relevant internships.
  • Demonstrated understanding of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, including the ability to calculate heat loads, energy balances, coolant flow, and pressure losses.
  • Practical experience conducting engineering tests, designing tests, writing test plans, following test procedures, and using instrumentation to measure temperature, pressure, or flow.
  • Ability to analyze test data using Excel or comparable tools, check calculations and units, and investigate differences between expected and measured results.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment or performance problems systematically, develop possible explanations, and use calculations and testing to support conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and component specifications, document test methods and findings clearly, and communicate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and service teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with liquid cooling, data center equipment, heating and cooling systems, or related thermal applications.
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, thermal modeling, or computational fluid dynamics.
  • Relevant laboratory, internship, and academic project experience may demonstrate the listed technical competencies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform thermal and fluid calculations to assess heat removal capacity, heat exchanger performance, coolant flow, pressure losses, and pump operating conditions; compare results with supplier data, product requirements, and measured performance.
  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures with engineering guidance, and evaluate product and component performance under steady conditions and changes in heat load, flow, and temperature.
  • Support laboratory test setup and instrumentation for temperature, pressure, and flow measurements; verify calibration status and data quality and account for measurement uncertainty when interpreting results.
  • Investigate thermal and fluid performance issues identified through manufacturing, laboratory testing, or field operation.
  • Work with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Global Services to reproduce problems, identify root causes, and verify corrective actions.
  • Evaluate alternate and replacement components, including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and sensors; support qualification testing and assess performance, operating limits, coolant and material compatibility, reliability, and serviceability.
  • Collaborate with electrical and controls engineers to evaluate temperature and flow regulation, pump operation, and system response to changing conditions.
  • Prepare calculations, test reports, technical recommendations, and supporting documentation for engineering changes.
  • Contribute to updates to product specifications, test procedures, troubleshooting guidance, and service documentation.
  • Support new product design reviews and validation activities, providing input on thermal performance, testability, reliability, and service requirements.

Benefits

  • Health insurance and holistic wellness programs with incentives, available from day one for the employee and family.
  • Fertility coverage and adoption/surrogacy assistance.
  • Up to 15 vacation days, paid holidays, and sick leave.
  • Additional options to support volunteer and parental leave.
  • 401(k) matching.
  • Educational and training opportunities through company programs.
  • Tuition assistance and student debt support.
