About The Position

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is hiring a part-time Therapeutic Recreation Assistant for its Therapeutic and Inclusive Recreation Services team. This 19-hour-per-week position provides community-based, goal-oriented, objective-driven recreation and leisure services and promotes inclusive recreation participation for people with disabilities. The role performs professional-level work assisting with and facilitating indoor and outdoor programs and inclusive and therapeutic activities during the day, evenings, weekends, and summer day camp. Similar roles at other Park and Recreation locations may also be considered.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver's license and County Driving Privileges.
• CPR and First Aid certification.
• General knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of recreational programming and instruction.
• Skills in applying classroom knowledge through hands-on activities; developing and enforcing classroom rules and safety procedures; managing multiple tasks concurrently; and organizing and presenting demonstrations in an area of specialization.
• Abilities in adaptability, applied learning, building trust, communication, customer focus, initiating action, and safety awareness.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in an educational, adapted sport, or recreation therapy setting.
• Experience working with a therapeutic population.
• Ability to supervise and manage participants with varying abilities and diagnoses in a group or classroom setting.

Responsibilities

• Assist in supervising Therapeutic and Inclusive Recreation Services participants and monitoring recreation equipment, facilities, supplies, and materials.
• Assist in providing inclusion support so participants can safely and successfully participate in park and recreation programs.
• Assist in facilitating Therapeutic and Inclusive Recreation Services programming, including summer day camp, at a Mecklenburg County recreation center or park facility.
• Provide positive and appropriate customer service and handle funds through program delivery and interactions with the public.
• Ensure the safety of participants and spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
• Assist in enforcing Therapeutic and Inclusive Recreation Services rules and regulations.
• Assist with setup and light maintenance of equipment and activities within facilities and recreational areas.
• May supervise children in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
• Direct public inquiries and complaints to the correct staff effectively and efficiently.
