About The Position

Work with a team of students and faculty to create scenery for the theater department’s productions.

Requirements

  • Know which types of lumber and plywood are used for various applications, such as making flats and platforms.
  • Know how to troubleshoot minor problems with the stationary power tools.
  • Know how to change blades/bits in portable power tools.
  • Able to build a scenic unit from a drawing with minimal instruction from the supervisor.
  • Able to lead a group of students in building a scenic unit.
  • Know the procedure for safely loading and unloading a batten.
  • Able to identify and communicate about potential safety hazards on stage and in the shop.
  • Crouching, kneeling/crawling, stooping, twisting/pivoting, climbing/balancing, reaching overhead, grasping/handling, pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs., operating hand tools, operating power tools, and operating equipment or machinery to perform the essential functions.
  • Exposure to loud noise, respiratory factors, chemicals, vibrations, proximity hazards, and heights or cramped quarters, as well as rare exposure to wet or humid conditions indoors, extreme cold, and extreme heat to perform the essential functions.
  • Candidates must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Production assistant in the Scene Shop for a minimum of 2 academic year or equivalent experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Building scenery using an assortment of power and hand tools
  • Painting scenery
  • Installing scenery on the Kelsey or Haugen stages
  • Finding or building props as needed for department productions
  • Assisting in keeping the theaters and storage areas organized
