About The Position

This role involves working as a Technical Writer/Business Analyst with experience in testing, verification/validation, MS Project/Smartsheet, and Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement. The position is located in Carson City, is for locals only, and has a duration of 12 months. The primary responsibilities include analyzing business processes, documenting technical information for various audiences, and ensuring the accuracy and usability of documentation and software. The role requires close collaboration with stakeholders, adherence to project schedules, and the creation of a comprehensive documentation suite. Additionally, the position involves testing software and documentation, writing test cases, developing test plans, and ensuring systems operate according to specifications and regulations. The Technical Writer/BA will also be responsible for maintaining technical libraries, publishing templates, and managing updates and revisions to technical literature.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree, first degree, or equivalent experience in Technical Communications.
  • Minimum 5 years, documented experience, as technical writer for complex software systems.
  • Minimum 2 years, documented experience in software development and/or testing.
  • Ability to write clear, complete and correct technical content and able to write in explanatory and procedural styles for multiple audiences.
  • Applies standards to the work of others to give information products a uniform voice.
  • Able to make progress with incomplete information.
  • Experienced in software verification and validation strategies.
  • Experienced in implementing test processes on projects, write test plans/cases, procedures and scripts, and analyzes test results.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and make them easily understandable in text and pictures.
  • Demonstrated capacity for self-directed learning is required.
  • Able to be flexible and adapt to change.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, customer service skills and passion to work through obstacles to produce results.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement and related security requirements governing the connection with and access to criminal justice information.
  • Experience utilizing project planning applications such as Microsoft Project (prefer experience with Smartsheet).
  • Demonstrated ability using a life cycle management process for implementation of changes in technology.

Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders (internal and external) to obtain an in-depth understanding of the PROGRAM, the PROGRAM audience and the documentation requirements.
  • Write, format, edit, review, and proof procedural and technical information for technical and nontechnical users; in a way that is engaging and understood by all users.
  • Determine the clearest and most logical way to present information and instructions for greatest reader comprehension and writes and edits technical information accordingly.
  • Identify problem areas or structural deficiencies and proactively contribute to their improvement.
  • Create (as necessary to complete responsibilities outlined herein), adapt, and adhere to PROGRAM schedules and deadlines.
  • Update existing documents, as applicable, to reflect PROGRAM changes.
  • Design and develop a complete documentation suite: technical specifications, PROGRAM and functional requirements.
  • Gather stakeholder feedback on documentation to improve usability.
  • Integrate use case and functional data into user documentation and examples.
  • Prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documents, including software and systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user documentation.
  • Maintain a library of application documentation, cataloging it for internal and/or external use.
  • Publish and maintain templates for written documentation produced by others (technical specifications, RFP responses, etc.), ensuring a consistent "look and feel."
  • Test both the product and its documentation for accuracy and consistency.
  • Revises, edits, or updates instructions, technical information, and frequently asked questions as necessary.
  • Coordinate between various groups to ensure software testing meets all requirements.
  • Write regression and user-interface test cases.
  • Develop understanding of user workflow to create, document, and execute test plans.
  • May be asked to create tests for ad hoc situations such as replicating field-reported problems or load testing under specific conditions.
  • Independently or with minimal guidance to create test environments that mirror a multitude of installed baselines.
  • Implement test processes on projects, write test plans/cases, procedures and scripts, and analyzes test results.
  • Perform functional testing.
  • Ensure all systems are running according to necessary specifications and operate within regulations to ensure the production of quality products.
  • Establish validation standards and develop testing protocols.
  • Plan, develop, organize, write and edit operational procedures and manuals.
  • Research, develop and document technical design specifications and test scripts.
  • Produce electronic documentation in addition to hard copy manuals.
  • Maintain a comprehensive library of technical terminology and documentation.
  • Analyze documents to maintain continuity of style of content.
  • Manage updates and revisions to technical literature.
  • Writing easy-to-understand user interface text, online help and developer guides.
  • Produce high-quality documentation that meets applicable standards and is appropriate for its intended audience.
