About The Position

The Network Laboratory Technical Specialist maintains the operation of the assigned section to meet standards of laboratory accrediting agencies. Oversees core lab functions and rapid response laboratory standardization. Serves as network technical specialist in assigned area of expertise (Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Support Services).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • At least 2 years of laboratory experience in non-waived testing in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical coordinator is responsible.
  • ASCP eligible.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of five years clinical laboratory experience in area of assigned expertise.
  • Two years supervisory experience preferred.
  • If assigned to Blood Bank, Specialist in Blood Bank certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures all assigned policies and procedures meet the requirements of network and lab accrediting agencies.
  • Ensures standardization throughout the network in assigned areas of expertise. Maintains and updates Laboratory Policies and Procedures as well as document control in area of specialty.
  • Oversees the maintenance procedures of instrumentation and ensures that resources are available for troubleshooting technical and instrument operations.
  • Ensures that the quality of testing is maintained according to laboratory policy and complies with licensing and accrediting agencies.
  • Maintains technical requirements for the core laboratory including monthly peer data evaluation, quality control review, and competency assessment.
  • Manages network projects in areas of expertise by preparing validation plans, coordinating and collaborating with technical coordinators, working with the vendor and Epic for the completion and success of the project. Reviews results with Pathologist or Lab Administrator.
  • Ensures selection of proficiency testing meets laboratory accrediting agencies’ standards.
  • Maintains effective communication within the network through technical coordinator meetings, manager meetings, meeting with Pathologist, etc. Serves on various laboratory/hospital committees.
  • Delegates responsibilities and duties to technical coordinators at each site so the section runs smoothly.
  • With Laboratory Quality team, designs and implements a Quality Management process/program to document performance and resolve system problems and service complaints.
  • Maintains current technical/scientific knowledge and competency in assigned area of expertise to perform patient testing as needed. Able to perform essential functions of MLS/MT in area of expertise.
  • Prepares and teaches lectures in assigned area of expertise for intern MLS program.
  • Provides input to Network Director for annual budget and to explain variances. Assists Site Managers on maintaining cost effective inventory.
  • Assists LIS analysts in resolving laboratory computer problems.
  • Coordinates teaching of students, public relations tours of laboratory.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
