About The Position

The Workbench Solutions Engineering team engages with the biomedical research community, from data stewards who want to share data to investigators and technical teams who want to use it. The team helps customers organize data and securely manage access, and works alongside data scientists to accelerate research. Workbench supports major national efforts, including the NIH All of Us Research Program and AMP PD. This is a senior, deeply technical role combining software engineering, cloud and platform engineering, and customer partnership. The engineer serves as a technical anchor for the team, taking on difficult and ambiguous problems and setting a high bar for design and implementation. The role involves building well-designed solutions that directly support biomedical research.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years designing and building production software, with demonstrable depth in software design and architecture.
  • Expert-level Python and fluency in at least one other programming language.
  • Hands-on cloud and platform engineering experience across GCP and AWS, including IAM and security, networking, infrastructure as code, containers, and CI/CD.
  • Experience independently owning ambiguous, high-stakes, customer-facing technical work end to end.
  • Excellent communication and project-management skills across multiple concurrent workstreams.
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience mentoring engineers, leading technical design reviews, or serving as a team’s technical anchor or informal lead.
  • A body of code demonstrating range and craft, such as open-source contributions, substantial personal projects, or production systems that can be discussed in depth.
  • Production experience with Kubernetes and operating containerized workloads at scale.
  • Microsoft Azure experience.
  • Experience with clinical or health-data standards and ecosystems, such as OMOP, FHIR, and healthcare or biomedical research data.
  • Experience with large-scale data workflows and analysis, such as BigQuery, batch pipelines, or statistical analyses.

Responsibilities

  • Own ambiguous, high-stakes customer and technical problems end to end, from discovery through delivery of a working, well-designed solution.
  • Design clean, maintainable tooling, integrations, and automation, and improve engineering practices through design discussions, code reviews, and mentorship.
  • Architect and operate secure cloud environments across Google Cloud Platform and AWS, including identity and access management, security, networking, infrastructure as code, containers, and CI/CD.
  • Build batch workflows and interactive analysis notebooks to process and analyze data at scale.
  • Connect customers’ internal data, tools, and processes to Workbench.
  • Analyze customers’ technical needs, recommend implementations, and train customers and technical partners to use Workbench successfully.
