Thermal Mechanical Engineer, Technical Solutions

Ecolab•San Jose, CA
•$150,000 - $200,000•Hybrid

About The Position

As a Thermal Mechanical Engineer on the Technical Solutions team at CoolIT, an Ecolab company, you will help advance direct liquid cooling technologies for AI, high-performance computing, and data centers. You will contribute to transitioning technologies from proof of concept through validation and readiness for product integration, developing and maturing solutions such as passive cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds, and modular cooling system components. You will apply thermal, fluid, and mechanical engineering principles to meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability objectives. The role involves design activities, analysis, prototyping and testing, documentation, and collaboration with manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer-facing teams. It reports to the Technical Solutions Engineering Manager. The position is hybrid, based in the Bay Area, and requires frequent travel to customer sites within the Bay Area, occasional travel to headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, and international travel as required. The work week is full-time during standard business hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience applying heat-transfer and fluid-mechanics principles to thermal design, including use of CFD models to evaluate fluid flow, pressure drop, and heat transfer.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up and statistical tolerance analysis, mechanism design and analysis, FEA, DFM, DFMEA, engineering testing and validation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Proficiency with CAD and simulation tools such as SolidWorks to create production-ready models and drawings, perform analyses, and optimize design performance.
  • Must reside in the Bay Area.
  • Ability to travel frequently to customer sites within the Bay Area, occasionally to Calgary headquarters, and internationally as business needs require.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 7 years of experience in thermal-mechanical product development.
  • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies for mass production using multiple manufacturing processes.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng./P.E.) designation or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Master’s degree or other advanced training in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Mechanical Engineering specializing in Fluid Dynamics, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Design and mature thermal-mechanical products and concepts, including passive cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds, and modular cooling system assemblies, to advance performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Advance liquid cooling technologies from approximately TRL 3 through TRL 5 for adoption by product development teams.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and related documentation in accordance with company standards, GD&T practices, and DFM requirements.
  • Conduct thermal, fluid-flow, and structural analyses; perform laboratory testing, data analysis, DFMEA, and root-cause investigations to validate designs and optimize performance.
  • Provide technical support for customer programs requiring development of technologies that have not yet achieved the required readiness level.
  • Address engineering problems involving heat transfer, fluid dynamics, mechanical design, simulation, and product validation within tight timelines.
  • Represent the company at customer sites, providing hands-on engineering support, gathering customer and application requirements, identifying emerging product and technology trends, and helping transition early-stage technologies into customer programs.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer-facing teams.
