Thermal Mechanical Engineer, Technical Solutions

Ecolab•San Jose, CA
•Hybrid

About The Position

As a Thermal Mechanical Engineer on the Technical Solutions team at CoolIT, an Ecolab company, you will help advance direct liquid cooling technologies for AI, high-performance computing, and data center applications. You will contribute to moving technologies from proof of concept through validation and product-integration readiness, developing and maturing passive cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds, and modular cooling system components. You will apply thermal, fluid, and mechanical engineering principles to meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability objectives. The role includes design activities, analysis, prototype building and testing, documentation, and collaboration with manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer-facing teams. You will support customer programs when technologies are not yet at the required readiness level and provide hands-on technical representation at customer sites. The position reports to the Technical Solutions Engineering Manager. The role is hybrid and requires residence in the Bay Area. Frequent travel to customer sites in the Bay Area is required, with occasional travel to the Calgary, Alberta headquarters and international travel as business needs require. The work week is full-time during standard business hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience applying heat-transfer and fluid-mechanics principles to thermal design, including using CFD models to evaluate fluid flow, pressure drop, and heat transfer.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up and statistical tolerance analysis, mechanism design and analysis, FEA, DFM, DFMEA, engineering testing, validation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Proficiency with CAD and simulation tools such as SolidWorks to create production-ready models and drawings, perform analyses, and optimize design performance.
  • Must reside in the Bay Area.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to customer sites in the Bay Area, occasionally to headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, and internationally as business needs require.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 7 years of experience in thermal-mechanical product development.
  • Proven experience designing mechanical components and assemblies for mass production using multiple manufacturing processes.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. / P.E.) designation or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Master's degree or other advanced training in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Mechanical Engineering specializing in Fluid Dynamics, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Design and mature thermal-mechanical products and concepts involving passive cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds, and modular cooling system assemblies.
  • Advance liquid cooling technologies from approximately TRL 3 through TRL 5 to prepare them for adoption by product development teams.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and related documentation in accordance with company standards, GD&T practices, and DFM requirements.
  • Conduct thermal, fluid-flow, and structural analyses; perform laboratory testing, data analysis, DFMEA, and root-cause investigations to validate designs and optimize performance.
  • Provide technical support for customer programs requiring development of technologies that have not reached the required readiness level.
  • Solve engineering problems involving heat transfer, fluid dynamics, mechanical design, simulation, and product validation within tight timelines.
  • Represent engineering at customer sites by providing hands-on support, gathering customer and application requirements, identifying product and technology trends, and helping transition early-stage technologies into customer programs.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, testing, and customer-facing teams.

Benefits

  • Generous paid time off, flex days, and a paid company-wide holiday-season shutdown.
  • Comprehensive benefits plan, with the majority of premiums funded by CoolIT.
  • Company-funded 401(k) contributions.
  • Annual professional development allowance.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance; auto, home, and pet insurance; identity theft protection; short- and long-term disability; 401(k), pension plans, retirement health care benefits, and short-term incentives.
  • Vacation (12 days), holidays, parental leave, employee stock purchase plans for full-time associates, daycare and caregiver-service discounts, adoption assistance, group legal services, employee assistance program, employee discount program, and education assistance program.
