About The Position

AMD is seeking an experienced Thermal Mechanical Engineer to support the development, characterization, and validation of server and computing platforms. The role involves hands-on thermal testing, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, and system-level debugging, in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams to optimize platform thermal performance. The engineer will investigate thermal and mechanical issues, analyze test results, and drive technical assignments through resolution. The position is based at AMD’s MET Center in Austin, Texas, and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of thermal engineering, heat transfer, airflow, and cooling solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with thermal and mechanical laboratory instrumentation and test equipment.
  • Experience with board- and platform-level hardware debugging.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to independently drive technical assignments in a cross-functional environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant thermal or mechanical engineering experience, preferably with servers, computing, or complex electronic systems.
  • Experience with CFD tools such as IcePak, Flotherm, or OpenFOAM.
  • Familiarity with computer system architecture and hardware.
  • Experience with SolidWorks; Fusion 360 is a plus.
  • Experience with mechanical fabrication and prototype development.
  • Familiarity with Linux and Windows environments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system-level thermal characterization, validation, and debugging of server and computing platforms.
  • Set up and use thermal and mechanical laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including thermocouples, anemometers, power measurement systems, environmental chambers, and Instron equipment.
  • Conduct CFD modeling and thermal analysis to support system design and optimization.
  • Debug thermal and mechanical issues during platform bring-up, validation, and production.
  • Work with platform hardware, including motherboards, PCIe cards, power supplies, cabling, chassis, and cooling components.
  • Support mechanical design, prototyping, and test fixture development using 3D CAD tools.
  • Analyze test data, document findings, and recommend solutions to improve thermal performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve technical issues and support platform development.

Benefits

  • AMD benefits are described as available in “AMD benefits at a glance”; specific benefits are not listed in the posting.
