About The Position

IonQ is hiring a Technical Programme Manager for its Control Electronics team, which develops custom electronic devices for IonQ systems, including the hardware, gateware, firmware, and test for precision control boards. The role drives the team’s workstreams in coordination with the programme lead TPM in the Programme Management Office, helping translate complex technical work into clear plans, measurable milestones, and predictable delivery for the quantum computing roadmap. It is a hands-on programme management role intended to reduce the operational burden on design engineers so they can focus on design and bench work. The role establishes the operating rhythm for the team, creates and maintains an integrated schedule, tracks dependencies, challenges estimates, and surfaces technical and schedule risks early. It coordinates procurement, materials management, suppliers, NPI, and production so that orders, parts, and boards are available to the engineering team, and helps address long-lead or obsolete components. It also keeps embedded software, systems architecture, and physics requirements aligned with the electronics plan, represents team progress in programme meetings, and requires travel to partner sites up to 20% as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience running or working closely within the full hardware lifecycle, including firmware and lower-level test, from requirements and design through fabrication, bring-up, revision, and production.
  • Enough exposure to firmware or RTL work to assess whether estimates are realistic; writing the code is not required.
  • A degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field.
  • Ability to work day to day with physicists and engineers, build trust, and translate progress, risks, and trade-offs into clear, decision-ready reporting for senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity, identify inconsistencies in messy data, and manage detailed procurement and tracking while knowing when to bring technical discussions to the right people.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree.
  • Experience as a technical programme manager delivering complex electronics hardware programmes from development into production.
  • Working knowledge of firmware, gateware, or RTL development and lower-level hardware test.
  • Hands-on experience managing procurement, component sourcing, and supplier issues for prototype or low-volume builds.
  • Fluency with Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, and GitHub.

Responsibilities

  • Drive control electronics workstreams across hardware, gateware, firmware, and test, managing schedules, resources, dependencies, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Build and maintain a realistic integrated schedule, challenge estimates, and identify technical and schedule risks early.
  • Coordinate orders, parts, and boards with procurement, materials management, and suppliers; help resolve long-lead and obsolete component issues.
  • Drive cross-functional execution with physics, systems, embedded software, NPI, and production teams, taking issues to closure with clear mitigation plans.
  • Establish programme cadences and executive reporting, including dashboards, status updates, and decision logs.
  • Represent the team’s progress in programme meetings so that team leads do not need to attend every meeting.
  • Travel to partner sites as needed, up to 20% of the time.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical insurance plans.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • Matching 401(k).
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Parental and adoption leave.
  • Legal insurance.
