Technical Programme Manager, Electrical Engineering

IonQ•College Park, MD
•$152,000 - $228,000

About The Position

IonQ is seeking a Technical Programme Manager for Electrical Engineering to drive workstreams for its Control Electronics team. The team develops custom electronic devices used in IonQ systems, covering hardware, gateware, firmware, and testing for precision control boards from development through production. Working with the programme lead TPM in the Programme Management Office, this role sits at the center of a cross-functional group of engineers and physicists. The manager turns complex technical work into clear plans, measurable milestones, and predictable delivery for the quantum computing roadmap. This hands-on position provides programme structure and logistical support so design engineers can focus on design and bench work. The role establishes programme operating rhythms, maintains integrated schedules, tracks dependencies, identifies risks, coordinates procurement and supply-chain activity, and keeps electronics plans aligned with physics, systems architecture, embedded software, NPI, and production. It also represents team progress in programme meetings and requires travel to partner sites up to 20% of the time as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience as a technical programme manager delivering complex electronics hardware programmes from development into production, or closely related experience within such programmes.
  • Experience with the full hardware lifecycle, including firmware and lower-level test, from requirements and design through fabrication, bring-up, revision, and production.
  • Degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field.
  • Working knowledge of firmware, gateware, or RTL development and lower-level hardware testing sufficient to assess estimates.
  • Ability to work day to day with physicists and engineers, build trust, and translate progress, risks, and trade-offs into clear, decision-ready reporting for senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate amid ambiguity, identify inconsistencies in data, and manage technical details as well as procurement and tracking.
  • Fluency with programme tools such as Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, and GitHub.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience managing procurement, component sourcing, and supplier issues for prototype or low-volume builds.

Responsibilities

  • Drive control electronics workstreams across hardware, gateware, firmware, and test, owning schedules, resources, dependencies, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Build and maintain realistic integrated schedules, challenge estimates, and surface technical and schedule risks early.
  • Coordinate orders, parts, and boards with procurement, materials management, and suppliers; help resolve long-lead and obsolete-component issues.
  • Drive cross-functional execution with physics, systems, embedded software, NPI, and production teams, taking issues to closure with clear mitigation plans.
  • Establish programme cadences and executive reporting, including dashboards, status updates, and decision logs.
  • Coordinate plans and dependencies across the hardware lifecycle, from requirements and design through fabrication, bring-up, revision, and production.
  • Represent the team's progress in programme meetings so that team leads do not need to attend every meeting.
  • Travel to partner sites up to 20% of the time as needed.
