About The Position

The Technical Coordinator is an entry-level professional and a key member of the Technical Operations Team. This role supports the operation, maintenance, and coordination of shared research and instructional facilities. Working under the guidance of the Program Manager and Director of Technical Operations, the Technical Coordinator assists with laboratory projects, facility coordination, inventory management, and safety compliance efforts. This position is well-suited for a recent graduate seeking hands-on experience in a research and technical environment. The Technical Coordinator for the Institute for Research and Applied Physics is an integral member of the Technical Facilities Team reporting to the Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • One (1) year of experience in lab operations or lab safety management.
  • Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
  • Knowledge of laboratory environments.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency regulations, policies and guidance.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with MS Office Products, specifically Excel
  • High level customer service skills

Responsibilities

  • Assist on Large-Scale Projects: Assist the Director of Technical Operations and Program Manager in identifying facility and laboratory needs. Support planning and execution of renovation, construction, and infrastructure projects. Maintain working knowledge of relevant building codes and safety practices. Assist in communicating technical requirements and monitoring contractor work within IREAP spaces.
  • Special Projects: Working with the Program Manager and Director of Technical Operations on special projects including but not limited to: mechanical, electrical, or structural components and equipment to meet the specific needs of research projects. Integrates custom components for existing research experiments and laboratory equipment. Assists researchers and graduate students in designing and creating parts for experimental setups, as well as for educational projects and programs sponsored by the department. Educates others on design tools and machining techniques.
  • Coordinate Shared Use Facilities: Coordinate the use of IREAP research space to benefit both research and education. Coordinate and follow up on all maintenance issues for labs as needed. Manage processes common across research programs including but not limited to consumables (i.e. gas cylinders).
  • Safety Compliance and Education: Assist the safety compliance officer with quarterly departmental safety inspections. Compile data related to departmental safety compliance. Work with researchers to ensure that all departmental facilities comply with safety standards. Educate researchers and students in the areas of safety compliance, including but not limited to: Appropriate Researcher Safety Training, Gas cylinder safety, Hazardous Waste Generator training, Chemical Hygiene Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, and Laboratory Safety Signage.
  • Inventory: Assist with tracking, organizing, and maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies. Support inventory audits and recordkeeping to ensure accuracy and accountability. May serve as a primary point of contact for inventory coordination under supervision.
