About The Position

The Technical Claim Director handles liability claims, primarily bodily injury claims in a marine liability context, with the goal of achieving optimum payout results through fair, timely, and economical resolution. The position assesses coverage issues, prepares coverage letters and documentation, investigates claims, sets reserves, and pursues risk transfer opportunities, including contractual indemnity and additional insured issues. Claims are handled in accordance with RLI's Best Practices, and the role may involve travel to mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as warranted.

The role requires substantial experience directly handling claims and/or litigation, along with meaningful experience handling bodily injury liability claims with significant exposure under marine liability policies, including Marine General Liability, Marine Liability, and Protection & Indemnity coverages. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of relevant case law, statutes, and procedures and will communicate effectively with insureds, claimants, underwriters, and upper management.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree and 10 or more years of experience in a similar position directly handling claims and/or as an attorney with litigation experience.
• Meaningful experience handling bodily injury liability claims with significant exposure under marine liability policies, including Marine General Liability, Marine Liability, and Protection & Indemnity coverages.
• Proactive investigation, risk transfer, claim handling, attorney management, and claims resolution capabilities.
• Superior writing and communication skills to work effectively with insureds, claimants, underwriters, and upper management.

Responsibilities

• Proactively handle liability claims, primarily bodily injury claims in a marine liability context, to achieve optimum payout results through fair, expeditious, and economical resolution.
• Assess and analyze coverage issues and issue appropriate coverage letters and documentation.
• Complete timely claim investigations and establish appropriate reserves.
• Pursue risk transfer opportunities, including contractual indemnity and additional insured issues.
• Handle claims in accordance with RLI's Best Practices.
• Resolve claims in a timely manner to achieve effective outcomes.
• Travel to and attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as warranted.
