About The Position
Chicago Trading Company (CTC) is a proprietary trading firm specializing in options market making. Its Developer Experience team owns how code is built and tested, including the build system, source control, CI pipelines, and remote caching and execution. The team treats this platform as a product for internal customers—engineers, quants, and traders building CTC's trading systems. The Tech Lead will make software building, testing, and shipping fast, reliable, and cost-effective on one modern stack. The role leads a small team while remaining hands-on, and oversees the developer loop end to end. A key goal is consolidating CTC's codebases on Bazel in a monorepo while live trading systems continue to ship every day without disrupting release pipelines.
Requirements
- Experience leading build or CI work for an engineering organization of 100 or more people, while remaining credible in technical details.
- Fluency with C++, Java, and Python builds.
- Deep experience with Bazel or a similar build system, such as Buck2 or Pants, at scale, including C++ toolchains, remote execution, cache behavior, and flaky-test policy.
- Experience consolidating codebases into a monorepo.
- Ability to measure platform work and cite before-and-after results.
- A developer-customer mindset and ability to achieve adoption by making migrations easy rather than mandating them.
Nice To Haves
- Experience migrating a large Java/Gradle or C++ (CMake/Conan) codebase to Bazel.
- Experience in uptime-critical or latency-sensitive domains.
Responsibilities
- Lead a small team of engineers, set direction, clear obstacles, and help the team's experts do their best work while remaining hands-on.
- Own the developer loop end to end, including the build graph, remote caching and execution, test policy, and pipeline speed and cost.
- Consolidate CTC's codebases on Bazel in a monorepo, replacing fragmented per-repository build and CI setups.
- Deliver these changes while live trading systems ship daily, without breaking a release pipeline.
