About The Position

The Department of English is seeking graduate students for the position of Teaching Associate (TA) for the Academic Year 2026-27. Teaching Associates are typically responsible for providing classroom instruction. The department is seeking TA applicants for sections of various courses. TAs will teach sections of various courses in the following semester and may have opportunities to teach other beginning courses in the English Department. Teaching Associate - Academic Year positions are hired with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign TAs to the course(s) that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English.
  • Currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Admissions to the Master Program in the Department of English, in good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Minimum GPA 3.5 in the Master’s program.
  • Completed ENGL 5055: Principles of Strategies for Teaching Writing by the end of Spring 2026.
  • Must be available to participate fully in all four days of the Summer 2026 TA Orientation and Training (August 10-13, 2026).
  • Must be a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one 4-unit First-year writing course per semester under faculty supervision.
  • Instruct and manage the classroom.
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence.
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assess student performance, including giving course grades.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Tutoring students.
  • Complete an orientation program conducted by the English Department prior to the beginning of the academic year serving as a TA.
  • Participate in bi-weekly one-hour long training during the semesters in which they are working as a TA.
