About The Position

The Department of English at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is seeking graduate students for the position of Teaching Associate for the 2026-27 Academic Year. Teaching Associates are typically responsible for providing classroom instruction and will teach sections of various courses. The department is looking for TAs to teach sections of different courses in the upcoming semesters, with potential opportunities to teach other introductory courses within the English Department. Teaching Associate appointments are conditional, based on enrollment and budget, and the department reserves the right to select the most qualified candidate and assign them to appropriate courses. Due to potential changes in staff and curriculum, the courses offered may vary, and employment from semester to semester is not guaranteed. The anticipated appointment dates are Fall 2026 (August 21, 2026 – December 23, 2026) and Spring 2027 (January 21, 2027 – May 29, 2027). Students can work up to 20 hours per week, with no more than 7.5 units assigned per semester.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English.
  • Currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Admissions to the Master Program in the Department of English, in good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Minimum GPA 3.5 in the Master’s program.
  • Completed ENGL 5055: Principles of Strategies for Teaching Writing by the end of Spring 2026.
  • Must be available to participate fully in all four days of the Summer 2026 TA Orientation and Training (August 10-13, 2026).
  • Must participate in bi-weekly one-hour long training during the semesters in which they are working as a TA.
  • Must be a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a background check.
  • Must sign a release form authorizing the release of information concerning any substantiated allegations of misconduct if they reach the final stages of the application process.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of faculty, teach one 4-unit First-year writing course per semester.
  • Instruct and manage classroom.
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence.
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assess student performance, including giving course grades.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Tutoring students.
