About The Position

This job advertisement is to fill an existing vacancy for a Teaching Assistant position within the CUPE4207-1 Employee Group for the course SOCI 3P45 - Sociology of African Canadians. The position is paid according to the employee's qualifications, with different rates for those holding a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree compared to those who do not. Additional duties required will be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate. The duties and responsibilities are in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement, and include scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time such as preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree or Honours Degree in Sociology or equivalent.
  • Completion of the course for which the applicant wishes to be a teaching assistant with a final grade of 75% or higher in that course (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated teaching competence. (eg. summary of previous course evaluations, faculty evaluations)
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet stipulated deadlines, recognizing that there are periods of intensive work associated with the position.
  • If vacancies remain, students enrolled in an Honours Program (completed 15 or more credits) in Sociology or equivalent (with an 80% average or higher) will be considered.
  • Applicants must make a case that their qualifications are equivalent to those required above.
  • For courses taken elsewhere, provide a transcript (a copy of your course and grade summary from your student selfservice at that institution is sufficient); highlight the course and provide the course description.
  • Graduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept an appointment in excess of an average of ten (10) hours per week over an academic term, in which she is enrolled as a full-time student, without the prior permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
  • Undergraduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept more than nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments, or the equivalent of nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments in any classification, per term minus the number of courses in which that student is currently enrolled.
  • Part-time Graduate Students and Non-Students shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e. not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.
