About The Position

The Less-Commonly-Taught-Languages Center in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Linguistics seeks a non-tenure-stream Teaching Assistant Professor of Arabic to design and teach a curriculum of 18 credits of Arabic language courses and related courses in the undergraduate Arabic program. The initial appointment is for 9 months per year for two years, August 15, 2026, through May 15, 2028, with renewal possible. Classes are expected to be conducted in person. The appointee will work to ensure the success of the Arabic language program by creating curriculum materials, engaging in student advisement, and participating in Less-Commonly-Taught Language Center events and other activities that support the Arabic program. They will participate in required University, School, and Department training, and may also be asked to serve on department and university committees to further the academic mission of those units.

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent degree) in Arabic Language Pedagogy, Linguistics, Foreign Language Pedagogy, or a related field.
  • Six (6) years of experience in teaching Arabic at the college level.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Arabic (speaking and writing).
  • Strong command of English.
  • Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of the culture of the Arabic-speaking world.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching a course on the structure of Arabic.
  • ACTFL-OPI and ACTFL-ILR certified tester.
  • Knowledge of critical integration of AI in teaching Arabic.
