About The Position

The Department of Languages & Global Studies (LGS) at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor of French. This is a 9-month, non-tenure track position focused on teaching undergraduate French courses and contributing to departmental and university missions through service activities. LGS aims to prepare students for a multilingual, culturally diverse, global community through the study of world languages, literature, and cultures. UND, established in 1883, is North Dakota's oldest research university with a strong liberal arts foundation, offering degrees in over 225 fields to nearly 16,000 students. Located in Grand Forks, ND, UND is situated in a vibrant college town known for its quality of life and affordability.

Requirements

  • Earned M.A. in French language, literature, cultural studies or related field by August 15, 2027.
  • Native or near-native fluency in French and English.
  • Ability to utilize current methods of language teaching and to embrace new pedagogies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work with and engage students and colleagues with a broad range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to teach and inspire students through mentorship.
  • Effective use of technology and the ability to learn new technologies/tools for both on-campus and online course delivery.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.
  • Verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • This position does not support visa sponsorship for continued employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in French language, literature, cultural studies or related field by August 15, 2027.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate, college-level French language courses.
  • Disciplinary specialization in a period prior to the twentieth century.
  • Record of excellence in teaching demonstrated through teaching evaluations and statement of teaching philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in French language, literature, and culture.
  • Contribute to the French program and the Department of Languages & Global Studies (LGS) through teaching and service.
  • Help grow the French program.
  • Contribute to curricular development and assessment.
  • Enhance ongoing recruitment and retention strategies for the French program.
  • Engage in service and community outreach.
  • Assist students in succeeding and preparing for global careers that use language and cross-cultural expertise.
