About The Position

The Department of Languages & Global Studies (LGS) at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor of French. This non-tenure track, 9-month contract position is contingent upon funding and focuses on teaching undergraduate French courses and contributing to departmental and university missions through service. LGS is dedicated to promoting the learning of world languages, literature, and cultures to prepare students for a globalized, multilingual community. The department offers majors and minors in various languages and global studies, and is part of the College of Arts & Sciences at UND, North Dakota's oldest research university. UND, founded in 1883, is the state's flagship institution with high research activity, offering degrees in over 225 fields to nearly 16,000 students. Located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, a vibrant college town, UND offers a high quality of life with advantages such as short commutes, good schools, and a cost of living below that of large cities.

Requirements

  • Native or near-native fluency in French and English.
  • Ability to utilize current methods of language teaching and embrace new pedagogies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work with and engage students and colleagues with a broad range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to teach and inspire students through mentorship while preparing them for global careers that use language and cross-cultural expertise.
  • Effective use of technology and the ability to learn new technologies/tools for both on-campus and online course delivery.
  • Earned M.A. in French language, literature, cultural studies or related field by August 15, 2027.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.
  • Verification of identity and eligibility to work in the US and completion of employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in French language, literature, cultural studies or related field by August 15, 2027.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate, college-level French language courses.
  • Disciplinary specialization in a period prior to the twentieth century.
  • Record of excellence in teaching demonstrated through teaching evaluations and statement of teaching philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate French language courses at all levels of instruction.
  • Contribute to the French program and the Department of Languages & Global Studies through teaching and service.
  • Engage in service activities for the program, department, college, university, and community.
  • Help grow the French program.
  • Contribute to curricular development and assessment.
  • Enhance ongoing recruitment and retention strategies for the French program.
  • Deliver courses both on-campus and online.
