About The Position

The Department of Languages & Global Studies (LGS) at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Spanish to teach undergraduate courses and contribute to the mission of the department and the university through service activities. This is a 9-month non-tenure track position contingent upon availability of funding. The Department of Languages & Global Studies promotes the learning of world languages, literature, and cultures so that students are prepared to engage in a multilingual, culturally diverse, global community. Our courses have intrinsic and practical value for students and represent the backbone of the liberal arts educational mission of the university. We offer majors and minors in Classical Studies, French, German Studies, Norwegian, Spanish, and Global Studies, as well as certificates in our five language programs. The department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. Established in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the oldest research university in North Dakota. Founded with a strong liberal arts foundation, it is the state’s flagship university and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having high research activity. UND offers degrees in more than 225 fields of study with approximately 16,000 students. It is the home of the state’s only School of Law and School of Medicine. The School of Medicine and Health Sciences has major initiatives in rural and public health, and Aerospace is home to one of the first and largest unmanned aerial vehicle programs in the world. Requirements

  • Earned M.A. in Spanish language, literature, cultural studies or related field by August 15, 2027
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English
  • Ability to utilize current methods of language teaching and to embrace new pedagogies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to work with and engage students and colleagues with a broad range of backgrounds.
  • Competent to utilize technology and ability to adopt new tools for both on-campus and online course delivery.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Spanish language, literature, cultural studies or related field by August 15, 2027
  • Experience teaching undergraduate, college-level Spanish language courses
  • Record of excellence in teaching demonstrated through teaching evaluations and statement of teaching philosophy

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Spanish.
  • Contribute to the mission of the department and the university through service activities.
  • Help grow the first- and second-year Spanish language sequences.
  • Develop the new Medical Spanish course.
  • Contribute to curricular development and assessment.
  • Enhance ongoing recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Engage in service and community outreach (10% effort).
