About The Position

This is a part-time itinerant position where the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), in collaboration with Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), provides support and instruction to students with visual impairments in their local schools and home settings. The role involves formulating educational objectives, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction, reporting student growth to parents, and participating as a member of multidisciplinary teams for evaluations, educational planning, and the development and implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). The TVI may also lead IEP meetings and is responsible for providing written reports and documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education.
  • Experience using a computer and other office equipment.
  • Meet State of Iowa teacher licensure requirements with an endorsement in visual impairment by the time of appointment.
  • Ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa on a daily basis.
  • Pass criminal and other relevant background checks.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in orientation and mobility (if qualifying via that route).
  • Possession of a current Iowa Orientation and Mobility Specialist license (if qualifying via that route).
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field (if qualifying via teaching certificate route).
  • Possession of a current Iowa Teaching Certificate (if qualifying via teaching certificate route).
  • One of the following current licenses from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners: School Psychologist; or School Counseling; or Speech Language Pathologist.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in education.
  • Experience working with students who are blind and visually impaired.

Responsibilities

  • Provide appropriate support and/or instruction to students with visual impairments in their local schools and home settings.
