About The Position

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate physician leader with expertise in Ophthalmology to serve as the System Chair for the Department of Ophthalmology. This role, primarily based at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, offers a leadership opportunity within a growing and dynamic Ophthalmology program focused on clinical and translational research and exceptional patient care. The Chair will collaborate with other leaders to develop and implement strategies and processes for patient care, ensuring adherence to all current and future standards of care for both inpatient and outpatient services, as well as necessary accreditations. Responsibilities include overseeing research and development within the division, aligning these activities with AHN's broader goals, and maintaining and advancing patient care. The successful candidate will be considered for the role of AHN System Chair, Department of Ophthalmology.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)
  • Board-certified in ophthalmology
  • Completion of an ACGME-approved Ophthalmology Residency
  • Licensed in the state of Pennsylvania prior to employment
  • Excellent clinical judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong commitment to patient care and education

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategy and processes for patient care in partnership with the Department Vice President.
  • Maintain all current and future standards of care, both inpatient and outpatient, and necessary accreditations.
  • Assume responsibilities for research and development within the division and connect these activities to the larger goals of AHN.
  • Oversee 7 physicians and 2 optometrists.
  • Articulate a vision, drive innovation, inspire others, and set high expectations for achievement.
  • Demonstrate collaboration by working effectively within a team-oriented environment and maintaining the highest level of customer service.
  • Relate well and work effectively with multiple constituencies and audiences.
  • Proactively identify issues and implement solutions.
  • Adopt value-based care quality system metrics.
  • Mentor and develop physician staff and team.
  • Prepare all necessary documentation including, but not limited to orders, consents, charges and medical documentation.
  • Direct all activities related to maintaining and advancing patient care within the department.
  • Oversee all programmatic and operational aspects of the Department of Ophthalmology.
  • Participate in regional, national, and international meetings.
  • Participate in the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Contribute to research activity within the department, including investigator-initiated trials, cooperative group and industry-sponsored clinical trials, laboratory investigation, and publication of research findings.
  • Develop the opportunity for resident and fellowship training programs.
