About The Position

The School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Radiology. This recruitment is Open Track/Open Rank, and the appropriate track and rank will be determined once the top candidate is selected. The Department combines the strengths of a leading academic department with the reach and opportunities of a growing health system, providing specialized imaging and interventional services across academic, hospital, ambulatory, and community settings. The Chair will provide strategic leadership across the Department’s clinical, educational, research, and administrative missions and will advance a shared vision for the future of UNC Radiology. The Chair will promote exceptional and compassionate patient care, educational excellence, scientific discovery and innovation, and the continued development of a nationally recognized academic Department. The Chair will recruit, develop, and retain outstanding faculty and leaders; foster a collaborative and high-performing culture; and ensure responsible stewardship of the Department’s financial, human, technological, and institutional resources. Working in close partnership with the School of Medicine, UNC Faculty Physicians, UNC Health, and University leadership, the Chair will advance an integrated approach to imaging and image-guided care and position the Department to respond to evolving patient needs, workforce challenges, technological advances, and changes in healthcare delivery. The Chair will foster interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthen the Department’s research and educational programs, and identify opportunities for strategic growth and innovation across the academic and clinical enterprise. As a senior institutional leader, the Chair will build strong relationships across organizational and disciplinary boundaries, contribute to broader School of Medicine and UNC Health priorities, and serve as a visible ambassador for UNC Radiology. The Chair will strengthen the Department’s reputation and impact locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally while fostering a culture grounded in excellence, collaboration, compassion, professionalism, and respect.

Requirements

A nationally recognized record of leadership and academic accomplishment in Radiology.
Significant leadership experience within a large academic Department of Radiology or integrated imaging enterprise.
Experience leading clinical growth, transformation, or integration across multiple sites or care settings.
Demonstrated success developing innovative clinical programs and adapting care-delivery models in response to workforce, access, capacity, and operational challenges.
Experience growing research programs, supporting extramural funding, developing research infrastructure, and fostering interdisciplinary and translational collaboration.
Experience advancing educational programs and supporting innovation across undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.
Experience overseeing or partnering around major imaging technology, infrastructure, or capital investments.
Understanding of emerging technologies and their implications for Radiology, including artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and evolving imaging and image-guided therapies.
Experience leading effectively within a matrixed environment requiring partnership among academic, faculty practice, hospital, and health-system leadership.
Demonstrated success in faculty recruitment, retention, mentorship, succession planning, and leadership development.
Experience with philanthropy, alumni engagement, and external partnerships supporting academic missions.
Evidence of national leadership and engagement within Radiology or related professional organizations.
