Supervisory Logistics Management Specialist (Interagency Dispatch Center Manager)

Office of the Secretary of the Interior•Fairbanks, AK

About The Position

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is hiring a Supervisory Logistics Management Specialist serving as an Interagency Dispatch Center Manager at one of the listed locations. The role directs daily dispatch center operations and supports wildland fire management objectives and interagency priorities. It is a GW-0346-12 position and is identified as an IFPM Center Manager position. Selectees must meet the applicable IFPM standards before moving into the position. The position is a supervisory, secondary-administrative firefighter role. Work is primarily sedentary and takes place mainly in a dispatch-center office, with sustained attentiveness, computer and radio operation, and occasional travel. The environment may involve interruptions, high communication volume, and intense operational pressure during emergencies. Telework is suitable only during an emergency or natural disaster. Emergency work may involve extended shifts. Applicants must meet the stated wildland firefighting, NWCG, and specialized experience requirements. There is no substitution of education for experience at the GW-12 level. Duty-location pay varies, and Alaska salary includes a COLA subject to review and adjustment. Eligible applicants changing duty station may qualify for authorized moving expenses at certain locations; recruitment or relocation incentives may be offered on a case-by-case basis, but are not guaranteed. Federal employees have access to a comprehensive benefits package; specific benefits should be confirmed with the hiring agency.

  • Must participate in Direct Deposit and successfully pass E-Verify employment verification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
  • Pre-employment and random drug testing are required; a verified positive test prevents appointment.

  • Must have primary/rigorous wildland firefighting experience: either at least one full fire season in a primary wildland firefighting role or at least 14 days of on-the-ground fireline experience. This experience must be clearly documented in the resume, including dates and hours worked per week.
  • Must provide a written description of direct wildland firefighting experience demonstrating knowledge of wildland firefighting principles, methods, and techniques. Education alone does not satisfy this requirement; prescribed-fire experience must be fireline experience and supplemented by fire suppression experience.
  • Must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW-11 level, such as serving as an Assistant Dispatch Center Manager and providing technical, operational, and leadership support for dispatch activities serving Federal, State, Tribal, and local partners. This experience includes coordinating dispatch operations, fire preparedness, aviation activities, resource mobilization, situational awareness, emergency response, logistical support, and policy implementation.
  • Applicants must document hours worked per week for qualifying work experience as specified in the announcement.
  • A supervisory probationary period may be required; continued employment after the probationary or trial period requires written agency certification.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work, and to travel overnight away from home.
  • No education substitution is permitted for experience at the GW-12 grade level.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive federal employee benefits package for employees and their families.
  • Basic moving expenses may be authorized for eligible applicants changing duty station when applicable distance tests are met; not all locations offer PCS, and moving expenses are taxable.
  • Recruitment or relocation incentives may be offered to eligible, qualified applicants on a case-by-case basis; a continued service agreement may be required.
