About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers for the 2026–27 school year in Brooklyn and the surrounding New York City area. Substitute teachers create positive classroom experiences and serve as role models who help students see what is possible. They may choose their own schedule and work up to five days per week in teaching assignments that interest them, with opportunities at K–12 schools across the NYC area and a potential path to permanent roles. Kokua provides support daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pay is $182 per day for daily positions and $210 per day for long-term positions, with weekly paychecks. Teachers are paid as W-2 employees. Paid sick days accrue after teaching begins. Transportation assistance is available through an opportunity to enroll and use pre-tax dollars for public transportation and parking. Background-check costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.

Substitute teachers may also support school operations as needed, including lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season. Kokua prefers candidates who can commute to two or more boroughs and are available to teach three days per week.

Requirements

• Completed a bachelor's degree.
• At least one year of experience working with K–12 students.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Willingness to step in where needed for school activities and student support.
• Pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
• Believe every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Nice To Haves

• Willingness to commute to two or more boroughs; preference is given to candidates who can do so.
• Availability to teach three days per week; preference is given to candidates with this availability.
• Include all relevant experience working with students on the resume.
