About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers for Queens and the surrounding New York City area for the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers work in K–12 schools, covering lesson plans and serving as positive role models who encourage students’ love of learning. Teachers set their own schedules and may work up to five days per week in assignments they choose. Assignments may include daily or long-term positions, as well as lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and test proctoring. The role offers a path to permanent positions at high-performing K–12 schools. Kokua provides support daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Requirements

• Completed a bachelor's degree.
• At least 1 year of experience working with K–12 students.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Willingness to step in where needed, including supervision, tutoring, and test proctoring.
• Pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
• Believe every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Nice To Haves

• Willingness to commute to two or more boroughs.
• Availability to teach three days per week.
• Include all relevant experience working with students on the resume.

Responsibilities

• Cover lesson plans and teach students in K–12 schools.
• Manage a classroom of students.
• Step in where needed, including lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
• Serve as a positive role model and support students’ learning.
