About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers for K-12 schools in Queens and the surrounding NYC area for the 2026-27 school year. Substitute teachers provide classroom coverage and serve as positive role models who help students develop a love of learning. Assignments may include daily and long-term positions, and teachers can set their own schedule and work up to five days per week. The role may also involve lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season. Kokua offers support daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and says applicants may receive an offer within one week of applying.

Requirements

• Completed bachelor's degree.
• At least one year of experience working with K-12 students.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Willingness to step in where needed, including supervision, tutoring, and proctoring duties.
• Pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
• Believe every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Nice To Haves

• Willingness to commute to two or more boroughs; preference is given to candidates who can do so.
• Availability to teach three days per week is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide classroom coverage in K-12 schools, including following lesson plans.
• Manage a classroom of students.
• Step in where needed for lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
• Serve as a positive role model and help students recognize their potential.
