About The Position

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108-bed residential treatment facility serving adolescent males and females aged 11-18 with psychiatric and behavioral health needs. The center features an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA, is a seaside city with a rich maritime history, conveniently located near Washington D.C. and other major Northeastern cities. This position is responsible for planning and providing instruction for students assigned to the classroom. The role involves participating in departmental meetings, completing paperwork related to assessment, individualized education plans, monitoring and reporting student progress, and transition planning. The Substitute Teacher will also provide education case management and maintain ongoing communication with families and involved agencies for each student.

Requirements

  • Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Special Education regulations, IEP development and behavior management techniques preferred.
  • Demonstrate some knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
  • Prefer at least 2 years of experience substitute teaching at the middle or high school level.
  • Experience with behavior management techniques, and previous classroom experience in a special education and/or mental health setting is preferred.

Responsibilities
