About The Position

The Substitute Teacher delivers specified course content when the classroom teacher is absent and provides a safe educational atmosphere in which students can develop intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically. The workday corresponds with the teacher’s workday. The position is on-call and part-time, for up to 29 hours a week, and serves Distinctive Schools campuses in Chicago.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Substitute Teaching License in ISBE.
• Familiarity with cloud-based software solutions, including Google Suite.
• Ability to learn digital tools and programs as needed for the position.

Responsibilities

• Teach scheduled classes and implement lesson plans, routines, and expectations established by the classroom teacher.
• Develop and maintain a positive learning environment, including effective management procedures and routines.
• Maintain the confidentiality of student information, grades, and school personnel.
• Take precautions to ensure staff and student safety and never leave students unsupervised.
• Consult with the grade-level or content team to resolve questions and concerns.
• Follow campus procedures and schedules.
• Promote proper use and care of materials, tools, and school property.
• Supervise non-classroom duties when assigned.
• Provide an impromptu, developmentally appropriate lesson plan or activity as needed.
• Assist students with coursework toward mastery.
• Assume the duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher.
• Adapt instructional approaches to meet students’ individual needs.
• Provide detailed notes and a summary of work completed.
• Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, families, and community members.
• Communicate information accurately and clearly.
