About The Position

Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA) is seeking an On-Call Substitute Teacher for Trix Academy, a tuition-free K–8 charter school on Detroit’s Eastside. PLA teachers create a caring and rigorous learning environment, set ambitious student achievement goals, deliver instruction, assess mastery, track scholar progress, and intervene or adjust instruction as needed. The role supports students’ academic and social development and contributes to a safe, respectful school community.

Trix Academy uses data-driven instruction, differentiated learning, one-to-one intervention, and social-emotional support. The school also offers daily enrichment in Arts, STEM, Culture & Citizenship, and Cultural History. PLA is a transformative education nonprofit that operates schools and provides summer learning, reading and math intervention, and workforce development programs. The network describes career advancement and expanded income opportunities for staff.

Requirements

• Passion for working with students and families in underserved communities.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, with appropriate endorsements if applicable.
• Valid state teacher license or enrollment in a credentialing program.
• Effective pedagogical skills driven by standards and data-driven assessment.
• Experience tracking and using data to drive instruction.

• Preference for teaching middle school mathematics and science.
