About The Position

The Student Government Relations Assistant supports the Government Relations Department in monitoring, analyzing, and organizing information related to state legislation and public policy initiatives. This role provides hands-on exposure to the legislative process, policy research, and government affairs while supporting the department’s engagement with state lawmakers, agencies, and external partners.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student in good academic standing
  • Strong interest in public policy, government, law, political science, or related fields
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
  • Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s program or Master’s program.
  • Retain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or experience related to government, public policy, or legislative affairs
  • Familiarity with state legislative processes or interest in learning them
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Track and monitor state legislation relevant to higher education, workforce development, economic development, and institutional priorities
  • Conduct basic policy research and prepare summaries of bills, amendments, and committee activity
  • Maintain internal tracking documents, legislative calendars, and briefing materials
  • Assist with preparing reports, presentations, and talking points for meetings with policymakers and stakeholders
  • Attend legislative hearings, briefings, or meetings when appropriate and provide written summaries
  • Support coordination with internal departments to gather information related to policy impacts
  • Perform administrative and organizational tasks to support ongoing government relations initiatives
