About The Position

The Student Success Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of BiGI (The Black InGenius Initiative) within the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego (USD). This full-time temporary, benefit-based position, anticipated to end on June 30, 2027, is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding. The coordinator will be responsible for implementing strategies to enhance student engagement, academic success, and overall student experience within the BiGI program. This role demands a proactive approach to student support, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to advocacy for underrepresented students. BiGI was created in response to long-standing disparities in educational access, opportunity, and outcomes experienced by the Black community in San Diego County, and serves all students who face disproportionality in educational access and outcomes. BiGI prepares sixth through 12th grade students for college or university with the confidence, preparation, and skills needed to achieve their academic and career aspirations.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Leadership, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in student services, teaching, counseling, coaching, or a similar role in an educational setting.
  • Experience in program development and student engagement strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong empathy and active listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement holistic student engagement strategies that foster academic achievement, personal growth, and overall student success.
  • Provide individualized academic and personal support while cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel empowered to thrive.
  • Maintain a comprehensive student case management system designed to address the unique needs, goals, and challenges of each student within their caseload.
  • Organize and conduct training sessions for POD leaders who facilitate Saturday workshops and Summer Academies, focusing on equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to effectively lead and engage students.
  • Monitor the progress and effectiveness of POD leaders, providing ongoing support and guidance.
  • Develop and enhance educational content tailored to BiGI, focusing on programs such as the Summer Academy, monthly Saturday workshops, and college tours.
  • Create neurodiversity-supportive and socially just curricula, utilizing research-based practices.
  • Collaborate with the BiGI team and faculty at the School of Leadership and Educational Sciences to align curricula with the initiative's mission of promoting social justice in diverse educational settings.
  • Collaborate with the BiGI team to organize and coordinate student-focused events and workshops.
  • Manage student communications and provide updates on program activities.
  • Track student participation and progress, maintain accurate student case management records, and contribute to the preparation of reports on student outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Act as a liaison between students, faculty, and community stakeholders.
  • Facilitate connections and networking opportunities for students within and beyond the university.
  • Collect and analyze student and caretaker feedback to continuously improve the effectiveness of student support services and the BiGI program.
  • Provide one-on-one and group support to students, addressing their academic and personal needs.
  • Conduct on-site visits to schools to provide assistance and ensure the success of students.
  • Organize and coordinate student events, Saturday workshops, and meetings.
  • Maintain and update student case management records, ensuring confidentiality and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with other staff members and departments to enhance student services.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of student success strategies.
  • Act as a point of contact for student and caretaker inquiries and concerns, providing guidance and referrals as needed.
  • Engage in continuous professional development related to student success.
