About The Position

This introductory level course, Practical GIS for Graduate Studies, is designed for students who are interested in using geographic information systems (GIS) in their thesis research or are fascinated by the potential of spatial data science to enhance their research. The course focuses on the practical and pragmatic aspects of working with digital earth data, including vector, raster, and satellite imagery. Key topics covered include horizontal coordinate systems, transformations, georeferencing, spatial data manipulation, geoprocessing, geocoding, and scripting for workflow automation and modeling. Upon completion, students will be confident in applying GIS concepts and capabilities to work with real-world spatial data.

Requirements

  • M.A. or M.Sc. in geography, environmental studies, or related discipline.
  • Experience with GIS.
  • Experience with spatial data analysis.
  • Experience with programming for geospatial data processing.
  • An acceptable level of education/experience could be viewed as being equivalent to the educational requirement and/or demonstrated experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach the Practical GIS for Graduate Studies course (GEG6102 Section A00).
  • Focus on practical and pragmatic aspects of working with digital earth data (vector, raster, satellite imagery).
  • Emphasize horizontal coordinate systems, transformations, georeferencing, spatial data manipulation, geoprocessing, geocoding, and scripting for workflow automation and modeling.
  • Ensure students gain confidence in using GIS concepts and capabilities with real-world spatial data.
