Sanford Health’s Student Nurse Internship Program is for non-traditional North Dakota State University students who will be engaged in full-time study during the summer semester. Interns work 18–24 hours per month. The program begins with one week of orientation, followed by placement in a specific department with a preceptor. Opportunities are available in Med Surg Flex (1C), Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Med Surg, and the Float Pool. The internship is a learning experience intended to build confidence and competence in clinical skills and support a smooth transition to a licensed role after graduation. Interns are mentored by a licensed professional in their specialty and can explore areas of nursing practice that align with their career goals, talents, and interests. Working alongside a nurse, interns learn about patient care, develop skills and time-management abilities, and experience working a professional schedule. Interns provide direct and indirect patient care and support departmental activities. They care for patients throughout preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, using appropriate population-specific protocols and policies for patients of all ages. Interns work within applicable state-specific regulations and Sanford Health’s vision and values.
