The Sanford nursing intern participates in a learning experience designed to develop confidence and competence in clinical skills and support a smooth transition into a licensed role after graduation. The program helps students identify a nursing practice area that fits their career goals, talents, and interests. Interns are mentored by a licensed professional in their specialty to strengthen clinical skills. This program is for non-traditional NDSU students who will be engaged in full-time study during the summer semester. Interns work 18–24 hours per month. The program begins with one week of orientation, followed by placement in a specific department with a preceptor. Opportunities are available in Med Surg Flex (1C), Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Med Surg, and the Float Pool. Interns provide direct and indirect patient care across preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. They learn alongside a nurse, develop clinical skills and time-management abilities, and support department activities while following patient-care protocols and state-specific practice regulations.
