About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period.

The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, merchandising, inventory, staffing, financial controls, safety, and compliance. The position involves occasional travel, including limited overnight stays.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
• Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
• Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
• Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
• Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety-control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
• Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
• High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
• Occasional ability to provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and travel to other stores.
• Ability to frequently walk and stand, bend, stoop, and kneel; handle merchandise and equipment; and lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.

Nice To Haves

• One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
• Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
• Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, pricing, and presenting merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
• Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
• Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
• Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
• Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
• Participate in store opening and closing activities.
• Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
• Help maintain the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
• Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
• Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
• Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
• Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
• Support employee development, collaboration, and communication between store employees and the Store Support Center.
• Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
• Make occasional trips to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
