About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate pursuing a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The role may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, store safety and cleanliness, employee development, and compliance with company procedures. The position involves a fast-paced environment, moderate noise, occasional exposure to outside weather, and some travel with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional ability to drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to travel, including limited overnight stays.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities; recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, fixtures, signing, and pricing of merchandise.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends and opportunities involving sales, labor, profitability, inventory turns, expenses, shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support communication between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Develop staff and ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
