About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate assists with recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store operations, cash and security controls, and completion of required paperwork. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors. The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It requires frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds, and occasional ladder climbing. Occasional driving or personal transportation is needed for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outdoor weather. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may receive preference at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
