About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. This position provides interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is intended to be held for a limited period. The role may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports recruiting, merchandising, inventory, customer service, store operations, financial controls, safety, and staff development. The position involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It also requires frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds, occasional ladder climbing, and occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, meetings, and visits to other stores. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers and carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and travel to other Dollar General stores.
Some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Foster cooperation and collaboration, communicate tactfully with employees, and maintain an open forum for exchange.
Provide ongoing attention to staff development.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
