About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and serves as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees. The role includes supporting customer service, staff development, recruiting and training, store compliance, financial integrity, merchandising, inventory control, and day-to-day store operations. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with a moderate noise level and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions. It involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays; occasional driving or personal transportation may be needed for bank deposits, meetings, and visits to other stores.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle varied situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and proper use of fixtures, signs, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Help maintain the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and cooperation, and communicate with store employees and the Store Support Center.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
